Seventh-Day Adventism is one of the largest and fastest-growing Protestant denominations in the world, distinguished chiefly by its observance of Saturday as the Sabbath — but is it a genuine Christian denomination, or does it cross the line into something else? This course traces the Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s origin in the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s through the ministry of co-founder Ellen G. White to its present-day global organization, worship style, and key texts. It works through the Church’s 28 Fundamental Beliefs and other teachings in full, weighing which doctrines Seventh-Day Adventists hold in common with historic Christianity and which they do not — including a close examination of the Great Controversy narrative, the SDA understanding of the remnant and the gift of prophecy centered on Ellen G. White, and its distinctive teachings on the Second Coming, the Millennium, soul sleep, and the state of the dead. The course closes by directly addressing the question asked most often about this movement: is Seventh-Day Adventism a cult?
