The New Age movement — once a fringe countercultural phenomenon — has become deeply mainstream, and its companion movement, New Thought, has quietly worked its way into a startling number of professing Christian churches. This course surveys both movements in full. It begins with the New Age’s sprawling catalog of beliefs and practices — transcendentalism, paganism, pantheism, esotericism, meditation, yoga, psychedelics, channeling, divination, mind science, astral projection, ufology, and spiritual psychology — then traces how New Age teaching has infiltrated the Church itself through practices like prayer labyrinths, contemplative prayer, and angel boards dressed in Christian language. The course then turns to New Thought, tracing its history and its “name it and claim it” theology of the mind’s creative power, and examining its influence on the Word of Faith movement, the Church Growth and Seeker-Sensitive movements, and elements of the New Apostolic Reformation (N.A.R.) and Progressive Christianity. It closes with a direct, verse-by-verse Scriptural refutation of specific New Age and New Thought teachings, a sobering survey of ministers and churches actively promoting these errors, and practical guidance for testing what you hear and protecting yourself and your family from deception.
