FS-103 Debunking the Flat Earth Theory

Flat earth belief, once a historical curiosity, has resurfaced as a genuine modern movement — spread largely online and, notably, embraced by a small but vocal minority within the Church. This course examines the claim in two parts. Part One surveys the modern flat-earth movement itself: its beliefs about the shape and mechanics of the earth, the alleged “ice wall” and dome firmament, and its central claims about gravity, flight paths, and photographic evidence — then works systematically through the scientific case against it, from the Foucault Pendulum and lunar eclipses to a point-by-point review of seventeen distinct observable proofs of a spherical earth. Part Two turns to the question flat-earth advocates raise most often: does the Bible itself teach a flat earth? The course defines the relevant terminology, surveys ancient Hebrew and early Christian cosmology alongside the historic geocentric-heliocentric debate, and then weighs the Scriptures cited on both sides of the argument — the passages flat-earth advocates point to, and the passages that describe a spherical, suspended earth — before reaching a carefully reasoned conclusion: Scripture does not address the physical shape of the earth one way or the other, because that was never its purpose. The course closes by affirming what Scripture is actually concerned with, and why a right view of God, salvation, and the reliability of His Word does not depend on where a Christian lands on this question.
