Christian Science — the belief system of the Church of Christ, Scientist — carries the name “Christian” and claims to restore the healing ministry of the early Church, but its actual teachings depart sharply from historic Christian doctrine. This course traces the movement’s founding by Mary Baker Eddy, its leadership and organizational structure, and its central texts, above all Eddy’s Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which the church holds alongside the Bible as a “dual impersonal pastor.” It then works carefully through Christian Science’s core doctrines — its denial of the reality of matter, sin, sickness, and death, and its redefinition of God, Christ, and salvation — before turning to a sustained, section-by-section Scriptural refutation covering the Godhead and the divinity of Jesus Christ, salvation and the reality of sin and sickness, and the Biblical teaching on Satan, angels, death, heaven, and hell. The course closes by confronting Christian Science’s points of overlap with ancient Gnosticism and other doctrinal errors, equipping students to engage this movement — and the many people caught up in it — with clarity and Scriptural precision.

Course requirements
