Dr. Michael Heiser

Early Life and Education

Michael Steven Heiser was born on February 14, 1963, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, USA. He grew up in a large family (one of seven children) and developed an early interest in scripture and ancient religions.

Heiser pursued higher education with a strong focus on ancient history, the Hebrew Bible, and Semitic languages. His academic credentials include:

  • M.A. in Ancient History from University of Pennsylvania (1992), majoring in Ancient Israel, Egyptology and Syria-Palestine.
  • M.A. in Hebrew Bible and Semitic Studies from University of Wisconsin–Madison (1998)
  • Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Semitic Languages from the University of Wisconsin–Madison (2004). His dissertation was titled “The Divine Council in Late Canonical and Non-Canonical Second Temple Jewish Literature.”

Heiser became proficient in approximately a dozen ancient languages (including Biblical Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Ugaritic, Egyptian hieroglyphs and others) for his research.

Academic and Ministry Career

After completing his doctoral studies, Heiser spent many years teaching at the undergraduate level and in distance education. He later served as Scholar-in-Residence at Logos Bible Software (a major digital Biblical resources organization) where he helped bridge scholarly research with lay-audience Biblical education.

In addition, Heiser founded the nonprofit ministry Miqlat Foundation and hosted the popular The Naked Bible Podcast, aiming to make advanced Biblical scholarship accessible to the general Christian audience. Later, he became Executive Director of the AWKNG School of Theology & Ministry at Celebration Church (Jacksonville, Florida), focusing on deeper theological education for lay-believers and pastors.

Major Works and Themes

Dr. Heiser’s scholarship is best known for exploring what he termed the “unseen realm” of the Bible—namely, the spiritual world (divine beings, angels, demons) as understood in the ancient Near Eastern context and how that worldview shapes Biblical texts.

Some of his notable writings include:

  • The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible (2015) — a popular work synthesizing his views on spiritual beings, divine council, and ancient context.
  • Supernatural: What the Bible Teaches About the Unseen World — and Why It Matters (2015) — a more accessible companion to The Unseen Realm.
  • Angels: What the Bible Really Says About God’s Heavenly Host (2018) and Demons: What the Bible Really Says About the Powers of Darkness (2020) — focusing on particular aspects of the unseen realm.

Heiser also engaged with popular culture and alternative worldviews: e.g., he critiqued ancient-astronaut theories (such as those popularized by Zecharia Sitchin) and sought to apply Biblical categories to modern fascination with the supernatural and paranormal.

Personal Life

Dr. Heiser was married to Drenna Heiser (now Heiser-Hollander) and they had four children: three daughters (Amy, Molly, Simcha) and a son (Calvin).

In 2021, Heiser was diagnosed with stage-4 pancreatic cancer. On February 20, 2023, he passed away at the age of 60.

Legacy and Influence

Dr. Heiser left a considerable legacy on both Christian scholarship and popular Biblical studies:

  • His work introduced many lay-readers to more rigorous ancient-Near-East context of the Bible, especially around “Divine Council” theology (the idea that there are created divine beings under God’s sovereignty).
  • He made academic insights accessible to non-academics, through podcasts, YouTube, public lectures, and his writings.
  • The Michael S. Heiser Foundation now continues to preserve and disseminate his research, offering free resources, scholarships, and publishing initiatives in his name.

At the same time, his work has generated discussion and debate: some scholars and church leaders appreciate his fresh insights, while others critique certain interpretive moves (especially around Psalm 82, divine council, or the role of non-canonical texts).

Summary

Dr. Michael S. Heiser was a gifted Biblical scholar, communicator, and teacher who bridged rigorous academic training with a passion to help everyday believers engage Scripture in deeper ways. His focus on the unseen realm—the spiritual realities underlying the Biblical world—challenged many to rethink familiar texts and broaden their understanding. Though he passed away prematurely, his work continues to influence countless students, pastors, and lay-readers of the Bible.
